The League of Women Voters of Warren County is celebrating its 60th year as a force for informed and active participation in government.

While the group took some time recently to commemorate that milestone, they also went right back to work.

Phyllis Wright with the League said the celebration was held May 21 at the Conewango Club. “Scrapbooks of the six decades were on display and a cake was prepared by the Culinary Department of the Warren (County) Career Center,” she said.

After the celebration, the League immediately dove into a program on a county Election Reform Study that the local League has undertaken over the last year.

That study took a wide view with individuals compiling data and analyzing trends — arriving at “consensus statements” — on several issues including voter registration, early and mail-in voting, drop boxes, voter ID and post-election audits.

Wright said the League also heard about a poll worker survey aimed at helping focus training needs.

“Over the past year,” she said, “many meetings were conducted to prepare the ‘Election Reform Study.'”

Part of last week’s celebration was honoring faithful years of service.

“Two member deaths were recognized — Mary Schorman for her 56 years of service and Barbara Tubbs for over 25 years of service, including her many leadership roles,” Wright said. “Ellen Ruffolo was recognized as a dedicated life member.”
