Warren man pleads to forgery from stolen checks

A Warren man has pleaded guilty to a felony forgery charge stemming from stealing and cashing checks totaling over $2,000.

Lee Jordan, 48, entered the plea during proceedings Thursday morning before Judge Gregory Hammond.

District Attorney Rob Greene said the plea was discussed with the victim.

Hammond noted that the charges are just a month old and asked Jordan’s counsel, Assistant Public Defender Francis Waweru, to detail the thinking that went into the plea.

Waweru said he and Jordan have discussed the case in “great detail,” both the specific facts as well as the sentence guidelines.

Hammond then detailed the charge.

He said Jordan took seven checks from the victim’s checkbook, forged signatures and cashed six checks totaling $2,200. He also advised Jordan that the maximum penalty on the charge is up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Online court records show that Jordan initially faced 19 charges by City of Warren police, all felonies. The remaining 18 offenses were not prosecuted in exchange for the plea.

The following defendants entered not guilty pleas during the same proceeding:
