Pickleball project at Betts to move ahead

The idea of pickleball courts at Betts Park is set to move forward.

That doesn’t mean, though, that there aren’t issues to resolve.

The Warren City Council last week granted a letter of support for the project to move ahead.

“We are asking your approval and support of what Parks and Recreation (Commission) has already recommended,” Kim Mong said, noting the club is “unable to go forward” to start fundraising “without the approval of the city.”

The City Council has outstanding concerns about the management of the courts and articulated in its motion to approve the letter of support that the existing special events procedure would handle that.

Mayor Dave Wortman stressed that there are remaining issues that need to be worked out and agreed upon with the club .

Council’s key concern was how the courts — which would be a public amenity — would be managed. Other issues such as funding and the permission of the Betts Foundation are no longer believed to be concerns.

The Warren Pickleball Club isn’t looking for city funds to build the courts.

“(I) believe that this project is a benefit for the entire Warren community,” Jon Marti, a supporter of the project, said, citing the additional recreation options it would create, how it compliments other amenities available at Betts Park and would put “Warren in the forefront of the fastest growing sport in the country.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
