Feds seek feedback on forest health project

Federal officials are seeking feedback on a 45,000-acre project on the Allegheny National Forest in “response to recent forest health issues.”

The project is located in Glade, Mead and Sheffield townships as well as Hamilton Township in McKean County.

“The Fourmile project is a planned, rotational forest management project on the Bradford Ranger District,” according to a document on the project.

“It includes a response to recent forest health issues that presently exist or are anticipated to occur within the project area.”

“In the summer of 2021, a group of Forest Service resource specialists reviewed the project area,” Bradford District Ranger Rich Hatfield said, “and developed a series of actions to bring the project area into better balance with the goals and objectives identified in the Allegheny National Forest’s Management Plan.”

A wide range of actions are outlined including “improvements to forest health through tree harvesting and reforestation” as well as oak restoration.

Others include the use of prescribed fire, treatment of non-native invasive plants, habitat improvements and stream improvements. The project will also result in adds, “management changes” and improvements to existing roads.

A comment period will be open until March 28.
