Longhouse work will not restrict access, officials stress
Federal officials have stressed that access to the recreation sites along Longhouse Scenic Drive will be maintained throughout roadway improvements that are currently being planned.
“Currently, the engineering design for the project is at the 60 percent phase with the 100 percent design expected (by) the end of March 2022,” Christopher Leeser, the Allegheny National Forest’s public affairs official, explained.
The work will be three phases over three years and start next summer.
“When construction work is occurring from Memorial Day to Labor Day, continuity — public road access — to each major outdoor recreation site will be maintained,” Leeser stressed. “The public should be able to drive to Jakes Rocks, Elijah Run, Dewdrop, and Kiasutha from either the north or south entrance to Longhouse Scenic Drive.”
He also discussed the importance of the road, more generally.
“Longhouse Scenic Drive is a key part of the Longhouse Scenic Byway experience and has a role in providing safe and dependable access to regionally recognized tourist destinations that are economically important to the outdoor recreation-based portion of the economy,” he explained. “The road improves the quality of life for local residents not only as a seasonal transportation link to Jakes Rocks, Elijah Run Boat Launch, and the Kiasutha and Dewdrop Recreation Areas but also as a route to conduct their day-to-day activities.
“Repairs and upgrades to the extensive number of culverts under the road will improve water quality and provide enhanced habitat for aquatic species in our local watershed.”
