Mayoral candidates make pitch to LWV

The sprint to next month’s Municipal Election is on.
The Warren County League of Women Voters heard from the two candidates seeking to be Warren’s next mayor during a recent annual membership meeting — held on Oct. 14 at the Crary Art Gallery.
Michelle Gray, membership VP with the League, told the Times Observer that that Phil GIlbert, running on the Democratic ticket, and Republican candidate David Wortman were “each invited to present a synopsis on their political experience and plans to govern if elected.”
She explained that Wortman highlighted “his vast military experience and portfolio of his public service within the community,” hitting on the role of government in the community and “the obstacles of working within the system to successfully entice businesses to invest in the city.”
Gilbert, according to Gray, “shared his childhood experiences of living in Philadelphia and the courageous decision that his parents made to move him to Warren after visiting on vacation.”
He also highlighted his experiences serving currently on the city council “and discussed the potential for directional tourist signs within the city.”
The League, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages “informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”
The county’s chapter dates to 1962 and more information can be found by visiting lwvwc.org.
“The League,” Gray said, “continues its work in voter registration and encourages all citizens to vote.”
The Municipal Election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 2. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
