Dozens attend ‘Rally for Reproductive Rights’

Around 50 people in Warren on Saturday were part of the nationwide Women’s March in what was called a “Rally for Reproductive Rights.”

Locally, the law that nearly prohibits abortion in Texas was the focus of the rally on the steps of the Warren County Courthouse.

A statement from the local group Indivisible Waren, Pa. said the rally was in response to “the draconian new anti-abortion law recently passed in Texas.

“A recurrent theme of the speakers and participants in Warren,” they said, “was disbelief that they are facing the possibility that the days when abortion was illegal may return.”

Sheible Stromyer, who unsuccessfully ran for state Senate last fall, spoke first and “described the social and economic situations that exist and make pregnancies difficult for women who cannot afford good health care,” the group said.

Brianna Powers, a local activist, “spoke about the impact of poverty on all health care with an emphasis on the health of women generally, and the reproductive health of those who can get pregnant,” detailing that, for example, clinics such as Planned Parenthood provide more services to women than just abortions.

The statement explained that Commissioner Jeff Eggleston expressed his support to those attending and encouraged people to get involved and engaged in elections.

“If you don’t take up that torch it is going to get passed to somebody that you don’t want it to get passed to,” he said. “The moment you think it’s all OK and that you are just coasting is the moment they will pull the rug out from under you.”

The final speaker was Pet Evans who, per the statement, “recalled how her generation benefitted from the past work of those promoting choices in reproductive health.”

“Choice,” Evans said,” is the word of the day.”

The statement from the group indicates that a counter-protester situation developed and police had to respond to diffuse the situation.
