Unemployment rate ticks up slightly in county

By Brian Ferry 2 min read

The unemployment rate in Warren County ticked up again in July.

The rate of 6.2 percent was higher than both June (6.0) and May (5.7), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I). There were about 17,200 people employed and 1,100 unemployed in the county in July, according to seasonally-adjusted statistics from L&I.

Still, the number was far lower than the rate from a year ago. In July 2020, the county's unemployment stood at 11.3 percent.

Compared to June, there were about 200 fewer people employed in local government in July, and another hundred fewer in trade, transportation, and utilities, according to L&I.

The county number was favorable compared to the region and the state, but higher than the national average.

Regionally, Meadville had the second lowest unemployment at 6.4 percent. Oil City had 6.7 percent, Bradford 6.9 percent, Erie 7.0 percent, and Forest County 8.4 percent.

The statewide average was 6.6 percent.

Nationally, unemployment was at 5.4 percent in July.

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor, seasonal adjustment "is a statistical technique that attempts to measure and remove the influences of predictable seasonal patterns to reveal how employment and unemployment changes from month-to-month."

"These seasonal adjustments make it easier to observe the cyclical, underlying trend and other nonseasonal movements in the series," making it possible to compare month-to-month.
