Society rolls out new artifacts at Wilder Museum

With about a month left in the season, the Warren County Historical Society is working on new displays at the Wilder Museum to end the season with a bang.

The museum is located on Erie Avenue in Irvine.

“We are very proud of the Wilder Museum. It’s a community treasure that too many people just don’t know about, but they should,” Casey Ferry, the Society’s event coordinator said. “There is something for everyone.”

New items on display include a postal uniform from a 35 year postal carrier, Merle Rowley, of Clarendon as well as a Warren Airways jumpsuit that dates to when the airport — now Betts Park — opened in 1930.

Also new on display is James Springer’s Boy Scout uniform, including “a medal presented by the US Treasury for his efforts in selling war bonds during WWI,” Ferry said. “Local artist Joanne Oviatt has been busy working behind the scenes in an upcoming totally new exhibit space and theme.”

The museum is open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and cost is $5 per adult and $1 per student. The last day of operation for this year will be Oct. 16.

“Season after season, staff and volunteers work countless hours to constantly improve the Wilder Museum by adding to existing exhibits and creating new ones,” Ferry said.

Admission to the museum will be free on Saturday, Sept. 25, as part of a reception in connection with the dedication of a new state historical marker in Starbrick.

The Society is also running a “Preserving History” fundraising campaign at the museum where all proceeds will go toward the operating costs of the museum. Those who can’t donate in person can also go on the Society’s website or mail in donations.

“If you want to experience Warren County history, this is the place to be, but you’d better hurry,” Ferry said. “We’re only open for a few more weeks until we close for the season, during which time, we will spend time gearing up for next year.”
