Hunger Action Month is about making sure tens of thousands of people in northwestern Pennsylvania don't have to decide between food and other basic needs.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania has joined Feeding America this September.
"The Hunger Action Month campaign aims to inspire the public to get involved and raise awareness of hunger in America," according to a release from Second Harvest marketing and media coordinator Natalie Massing. "September marks the 14th year Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, has organized the annual call to action. This year's campaign presents the impossible choices that millions of Americans must make between food and other basic needs."
"For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat," Feeding American CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot said. "For people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. It's often an impossible decision between food or other crucial needs, such as electricity, childcare, or medicine."
"Nobody should be forced to make a choice to go hungry," Babineaux-Fontenot said. "With the public's support, we can come together to help people achieve long-term food security, so they no longer have to make such tough decisions."
According to Second Harvest, there are an estimated 88,170 people in the region facing hunger.
During September, people in northwest Pennsylvania interested in becoming involved can do so in several ways:
¯ Donating to Second Harvest Food Bank of NWPA at www.nwpafoodbank.org;
¯ Volunteering at the warehouse, office, or remotely, for Second Harvest of NWPA; and
¯ Follow and share Second Harvest Food Bank of NWPA on our social sites.
"During Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania invites our community to get involved with our food bank by either volunteering, donating, raising awareness, or advocating for those who are experiencing hunger," CEO Karen Seggi said. "In the month of September, our community can come together to truly make a difference in our effort to help feed more people than ever before."
