If success breeds success, it might then be fair to say that successful trails breed trails.
Federal officials have proposed a new trail -- open to mountain bikers -- that would connect Kinzua Beach to the Morrison trail system.
They've sailed it the "Sam's Rocks" trail construction project and the ANF is currently seeking comments on the project.
The trail will total about 2 miles, starting at Kinzua Beach, crossing Rimrock Road and connecting to Morrison via a cross-country ski-trail.
"The proposed action is designed to enhance the visitor experience and alleviate parking issues," ANF Natural Resource Specialist Justin Woldt said. "This link will complement the existing trail system and provide another great option for many different users to recreate in this popular area which includes the Morrison Boat Access Campground. The trail will be open to hikers, bicyclists, and cross-country skiers."
Federal officials indicate that the trail will create a new 6-mile loop "that begins and ends at Kinzua Beach utilizing the Kinzua Connector Trail which is currently being constructed in partnership with the Northern Allegheny Mountain Bike Association."
A scoping document for the project notes that the Morrison system -- two loops totaling approximately 12 miles -- is currently open to hiking and bicycling.
"It is considered one of the more popular trails on the Bradford Ranger District, with some users utilizing the Morrison Boat Access Campground for overnight camping. Portions of the trail are quite rugged, while other portions are highly developed (for example, the first mile has been graveled)."
According to a statement from the ANF, the new proposed trail would have a tread of between 18 and 36 inches, a "design grade" of between three and 10 percent.
Additionally, a "minimal number" of trees smaller than six inches in diameter will be removed as part of construction.
They say comments on the proposal are "most helpful" if received by Oct. 1. Comments can be submitted via email, phone or via mail to Bradford District Ranger Rich Hatfield.
