TCCS sisters are awarded scholarship

Photo provided to the Times Observer Angelica and Veronica D’Amico, graduates of Tidioute Community Charter School, were awarded the Butch Hulings Memorial Scholarship designed specifically for students pursuing trade or technical school education.

Identical twins attending the same medical assistant program have been awarded the same scholarship.

Angelica and Veronica D’Amico were recipients of the Butch Hulings Memorial Scholarship.

Monica Morgan, the scholarship’s founder, said she was looking for a way to honor her father who was a tradesman after service in the U.S. Navy. The focus of the scholarship, she said, then became “like-minded students.”

This marks the second year the awards have been made to two Tidioute Community Charter School students who plan to attend a trade or technical school.

“There are numerous scholarships for college, but not quite as many dedicated solely to trade schools,” Morgan said, “so I wanted to give an advantage to trade or technical school-bound students.”

She explained the application process is simple — an application with a letter of acceptance from the school the student will be attending. Applications are due by April 30 of each year.

“The family has a scoring system to ‘grade’ the applications so it is completely fair to all applicants,” she explained. “Some of my family live in Tidioute, so we may know some of the applicants, and we wanted a way to ensure fairness when choosing the winners.”
