Bitcoin ATMs becoming more common locally

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry The ATM at Choice on Pennsylvania Avenue in Warren clearly indicates that it can handle Bitcoin transactions.

No need for a major mining operation — there are ATMs that will handle Bitcoin transactions.

Despite the name, cryptocurrencies are now out in the open.

An ATM at Choice on Pennsylvania Avenue trades in Bitcoin, as well as more traditional ATM banking.

Bitcoin banking at an ATM isn’t like regular banking.

“I know you have to have an app for it,” Choice cashier Daniel Johnson said.

In addition to requiring a digital wallet to accept new Bitcoin or disburse existing ones, there is a patience requirement. At least one regular patron pulls up a chair to use the machine, he said. “It must be pretty intricate.”

Because the ATM serves both Bitcoin and traditional banking customers, it is difficult to say how often patrons come in for Bitcoin services.

An online search for Bitcoin ATM pulled up several locations in the region — one each in Warren, Kane, Bradford, and Jamestown, N.Y. — and some locations in surrounding counties that are not in cities.

There are two such ATMs in the Salamanca, N.Y., area.

There could be other ATMs in the area that trade in Bitcoin, but they are not so labeled.

For those thinking of going to one of those ATMs and buying a Bitcoin, the price for one Bitcoin as of Tuesday evening was $48,175.

Starting at $3.50/week.
