Election Board moves Freehold precinct
Voters in Freehold Township will be heading to a different polling location for this fall’s general election.
The county’s Elections Board — comprised of the county commissioners — approved the move from the Freehold Twp. building to the Wrightsville VFD Social Hall during a Wednesday meeting.
Elections Director Lisa Rivett said the change moves the precinct to “more in the outlying part” of the township but is just a five minute drive from the current location.
She assured the board that the fire department has approved the change and said the township has no strong feelings about where the precinct is located.
The issue came up during Monday’s work session where there was discussion that the precinct’s poll worker may quit if the polling place wasn’t moved.
In other election-specific discussions, Commission Ben Kafferlin said he and Public Safety Director Ken McCorrison participated in a tabletop exercise with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Department of State on Tuesday regarding election-related issues.
Paired with some much larger counties — including the largest, Philadelphia — Kafferlin said “when it comes to election security, I walked away feeling very good about the election integrity of our process.”
Some potential areas to improve included how to handle misinformation, reactions to potential protests and expanding communication options with elections staff on election day.
He also recommended de-escalation training for some poll workers to be able to resolve potentially threatening situations.
But Kafferlin said he left the session with the view that the county has taken “all the right steps.”
