Sentence stands for man who meth poisoned 4-year-old

A man who was sentenced in the aggravated range in April as a result of an incident in which an infant suffered methamphetamine poisoning was denied reconsideration of that sentence on Friday.

Jeremy D. Ross, 40, of Bear Lake, was sentenced to 21 to 42 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of children.

According to court documents, a four-month-old child was taken to Corry Memorial Hospital on Nov. 18, 2019. That child was determined to be suffering from methamphetamine poisoning.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the child’s mother told police the child must have been in contact with methamphetamine left at the home by her boyfriend – Ross. Ross told police the mother was responsible, according to the affidavit.

The child’s mother was sentenced to 11.5 to 23 months in jail and one year of probation after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of children.

Attorney Elizabeth Feronti asked the court to reconsider Ross’ sentence.

“A sentence in the standard range would have been sufficient,” Feronti said.

There were several factors in play, Court of Common Pleas President Judge Maureen Skerda said.

“He was placed on bail supervision,” she said. “The bail revocation was part of the concern.”

“He would be in a better position to get treatment” with a state sentence, she said.

District Attorney Rob Greene pointed out that Ross showed up for sentence court “high on methamphetamine.”

Skerda said the age of the victim was the ultimate reasoning for the sentence.

“When we’re dealing with a four-month-old child, I think (a sentence in the aggravated range) is perfectly acceptable,” Skerda said. “For that reason, the motion is denied.”
