Through much of the 19th and into the early 20th century, the most efficient way to get the vast lumber resources of this area to market was on rafts like this that would be floated to Pittsburgh and beyond, including as far as New Orleans. This raft was tied to the north bank of the Allegheny River along what is now the 400 block of Pennsylvania Ave. W.
