County COVID cases are up this month

As Pennsylvania opens up Phase 2 for vaccinations, there is a bit of a resurgence in COVID-19 cases locally.

The COVID-19 case count in Warren County is up this month.

Over the past week, there have been 60 new cases — with a single-day high of 16 and a low of one, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

There were 119 cases in all of March. There have been 99 already in April.

The daily average is up from 3.84 new cases per day in March to 8.25. In February, there was an average of 4.96 new cases per day. The last time there was a higher average for a month than the current April mark was in January, when there were 17.6 new cases per day. Even that number is far short of the surge in December when there were 37.8 new cases in the county on average.

Almost half of the new cases — eight confirmed and 20 probables– are in the Warren zip code. The rest of the new cases are spread out over the county with every zip code but Bear Lake, Spring Creek, and Tidioute having at least one new case over the last week.

According to Department of Health data, the last COVID-related death in the county was recorded on Feb. 22. That death, which brought the county total to 99, was not added to the total until March.

The latest numbers show four COVID-positive patients at Warren General Hospital. None of those patients were on ventilators nor in intensive care, according to the department.

According to the department, 5,388 county residents are fully vaccinated and another 5,393 have received one of two doses.

As of Tuesday, Pennsylvania moved to vaccination Phase 2. Every state resident who is at least 16 years old is eligible. Only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for those under 18.

Those who have not been vaccinated and want to be should register with a local provider.

Tops, CVS, and Walmart pharmacies are partners in the federal vaccine program.

Gaughn’s Drug Store and Warren General receive state allocations.

Only the Moderna vaccine is publicly available in Warren County. The Pfizer vaccine is available through providers in some neighboring counties.
