Man faces charges after Tues. stabbing

A Glade Township man faces a slate of charges — including aggravated assault — in connection with a stabbing that occurred Tuesday evening at his Cobham Park Road residence.

Nicholas K. Bennett, 35, 2882 Cobham Park Road, was charged by Warren-based Pennsylvania State Police through District Judge Todd Woodin’s office.

Troopers, according to the affidavit of probable cause, were contacted by the 911 Center and arrived on scene shortly after 7:30 p.m.

At that time, the 36-year-old male victim was being treated on scene by EMTs. He was ultimately transferred to Warren General Hospital and then flown to UPMC Hamot for treatment.

Troopers “observed a large pool of blood near the front entry steps of the residence” as well as a “knife on the floor of the porch. There was also some bloody clothing lying next to the knife.”

Police interviewed a 36-year-old female at the scene who was present at the scene. She reported that Bennett had been drinking whiskey for several hours and became angry, telling police he “punched (the) wall in severa places” and “threw a large knife against the wall and held a small knife against her left leg.”

The woman reported that Bennett “was holding her and trying to put a choke hold on her… saying things like you know how it ends on Snapped” — a TV show that highlights murder cases.

The stabbing victim was called to the residence and found Bennett with the woman in a bedroom. The woman “stated that she yelled that Bennett had a knife and ran out of the bedroom to the car in the driveway.”

She then told police that a “short time” later the stabbing victim “came outside and lifted his clothing to show he had been stabbed. Bennett exited the house and fled the scene in the Subaru that was parked in the driveway.”

Troopers interviewed the stabbing victim at UPMC Hamot. “The victim told (police) that he had pushed Bennett and then there was a brief scuffle. The victim was then stabbed by Bennett four times to his back and slashed once on his back. The victim was able to disarm Bennett.”

According to the criminal complaint, the knife was 7 inches long with a 3.5-inch blade.

Police observed a vehicle matching the description of the one driven by Bennett traveling north on Cobham Park Road turning on to Page Hollow Road towards Scandia Road, the affidavit explains.

Police “attempted to observe the registration place on the vehicle, however, the operator began pulling away from (police) in speed.”

Troopers caught the vehicle, though, and conducted a felony traffic stop. Per the affidavit, Bennett “exited the vehicle as the operator and sole occupant.” They reported detecting a “moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage on or about his person.”

He was taken into custody and transported to the state police barracks in Starbrick where he “showed signs of impairment at the conclusion” of standard field sobriety tests. A breath test administered at 11:11 p.m. resulted in a blood alcohol content level of .103.

Bennett was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, flight to avoid apprehension/trial/punishment, driving under the inluence, terroristic threats, harassment and driving without a license.

He was arraigned by Woodin at 1 a.m. and was placed in the county jail after he was unable to post $75,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 17 at 9 a.m.
