When the Warren County Historical Society is looking for help, Sue Borland is at the top of the list.
Borland is the historical society's Volunteer of the Year 2020.
"Sue began her association with the Warren County Historical Society during the 2011 Civil War Sesquicentennial celebration," Managing Director Michelle Gray said. "It was a three-day weekend event with an ongoing line of visitors drawn to the historical society's Civil War exhibits, programs, and encampments."
"Sue is a Warren native, married to her high school sweetheart Ike," Gray said. "They have two sons, Brian, living in Tampa, FL, and Mark, here in Warren," Gray said. "They have five grandchildren, all of whom are very important to them. Sue retired from Whirley DrinkWorks as their credit manager in November 2018 and, after retirement, was ready to step up and volunteer in the community."
She started spending more time with the historical society.
"Upon Sue's retirement, she began volunteering on a regular basis, serving as a docent at the Wilder Museum of Warren County History in Irvine," Gray said. "She also became a member of the historical society's education committee, serving as an intricate supporter in the planning of the Warren County Historical Society's History Camp program for middle school-aged students."
"Sue is well-versed in textiles, enjoys researching those hard-to-find answers, and is always willing to provide an educational Civil War program," Gray said.
The Civil War is a particular interest of the Borlands.
"Sue became involved with Civil War re-enacting in the late 1990s and she and Ike actively participated for several years," Gray said.
"Marry a history nut and you never know what odd hobby you may get," Borland said.
"Sue also enjoys reading, cooking, and quilting," Gray said.
A group of 20 middle school students in a room may not reflect normalcy for most, but after a year of pandemic, it does for Borland.
"She is looking forward to normalcy again and another round of History Camp," Gray said. "She is a team player and we are lucky to have her as a member of the organization."
