Trunk or Treat Event

A free “Trunk or Treat” event will be held at the Youngsville Free Methodist Church, 179 Davis St., on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. There will both indoor and outdoor events. Trick or treating will be held indoors along with some games. There will also be wagon rides, food at the pavilion, and a campfire outside. The church is in need of fun-sized candy donations for the event. Candy donations can be dropped off in the church lobby, which is open until 8 p.m. There will be a labeled tote for the candy donations.

Free Concert, Programs and Workshops at Chapman State Park

The following programs are free and open to the public. Chapman State park is located at 4790 Chapman Dam Road, Clarendon. Participants are asked to occupy designated area to meet social distancing guidelines. Possession of face coverings will be required to attend all programs. Registration is only required for some programs.

Today: Free outdoor concert by the band “Simple Gifts” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the amphitheater. In case of rain, the concert will take place in Pavilion 4. No registration required. Karen Hirshon and Linda Littleton play a wide variety of ethnic folk music, and those attending will hear selections that range from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs, haunting Gyspy melodies, and exotic Balkan dance tunes. Throughout their performance, Simple Gifts puts their own distinctive stamp on traditional tunes, creating some of the finest arrangements in folk music today. Those attending are welcome to take photos, but no videos without written permission from the artists. The musicians will be available during intermission and after the concert for visiting and album signing. Today: “How to Play the Spoons” workshop from 4:30 to 5:40 p.m. at the amphitheater. In case of rain, the workshop will take place in Pavilion 4. There is no cost, but those attending are asked to pre-register and bring two teaspoons. Recommended for ages 8 to adult. The band Simple Gifts will teach participants of all ages to play spoons, following in the Appalachian tradition where two teaspoons are held in one hand and played as a percussion instrument. Self-guided GPS Scavenger Hunt: No registration necessary, this is a self-guided activity to complete at one’s own pace. Those participating will need a GPS unit or smartphone to participate. Read the clues and enter the coordinates at each location.

The final location will be a traditional container. Log the visit when finished. The hunt is a temporary activity/program so it will not be posted on geochaching.com. Enter the following to get started- Coordinates: N41.45.030 W079.10.353. Contact Jen Moore with questions.

Self-guided Geocache activity: ” Where in the Park is Bigfoot?” No registration necessary, this is a self-guided activity to complete at one’s own pace. Search for Bigfoot by following clues he left behind. This is now a geocache event. A GPS unit is not required to complete this activity. Start at the amphitheater and follow the clues. Coordinates are on the clues for those who want to use a GPS or smart phone.

Garland VFD Bingo open to public

Monday the Garland Fire Hall is having bingo. Doors open at 4 p.m . and Bingo starts at 6 p.m. A $30 donation is for all a player can play on regular card. There will also be a “Cover All Jackpot,” Power Ball, dual dab and other games. The kitchen opens at 4 p.m.

Borough Leaf Pick up schedule

The Youngsville Borough Leaf Pick up Schedule is starting on Monday, Oct. 19. Rake leaves to the curb. Do not rake into the street. Please, no stones. Bundle sticks and branches and pile separately from leaves. Monday: Railroad, East Main, Davis, College, Orchard, Oak, and Church streets. Tuesday: Woodard, Poplar, Ford IOOF, Marsh, Bates, and Pleasant streets. Wednesday: Brown Hill, Water, Mill, Highland, Second, West Main, Old Pittsfield, High, Broad, Beckenwood, and Sonia streets. Thursday: 3rd to 9th, Dillion, Division, North Main, Yucha, McGraw, Spring, Hillside, LaVerne streets. Friday: areas no completed on assigned days. Call the borough with questions at 814-563-4604.
