Former Rep. Clinger backs Biden

Former Republican Congressman William Clinger is one of 27 past Republican members of Congress that has signed on to endorse Democrat Joe Biden in the upcoming presidental election.

Clinger, now 91, served in the House of Representatives from 1979 until 1997 in both the 23rd District and 5th District, both of which included Warren County.

According to the Biden campaign, a total of 27 former Republican members of Congress have formally endorsed Biden.

Other Pennsylvania Congressman include Charlie Dent and Jim Greenwood while Sen. Jeff Flake, who openly challenged Trump in the Senate, is also on the list.

This is not the first time that Clinger has broken ranks with Trump.

About a month prior to the 2016 general election, Clinger was one of 30 former Republican members of Congress that signed off on a letter which suggested that Trump “has proven himself manifestly unqualified to be president.”

“In nominating Donald Trump, the Republican Party has asked the people of the United States to entrust their future to a man who insults women, mocks the handicapped, urges that dissent be met with violence, seeks to impose religious tests for entry into the United States and applies a de facto ethnicity test to judges,” they continued. “Sadly, our party’s nominee this year is a man who makes a mockery of the principles and values we have cherished and which we sought to represent in Congress.”

The representatives concluded by claiming that “Donald Trump’s unfitness for public office has become ever more apparent,” suggesting his “disgraceful candidacy is indefensible.”

“We blew it by not encouraging others to run,” Clinger said when that letter was released. “He was the only anomaly with a totally different agenda. People were looking for change. There is a deep wellspring of anger.

“He is crazy,” Clinger continued, “with some sort of a neurological problem. He is a narcissist. The party is in a very bad position…. It is very unfortunate. He has hijacked the Republican Party….”
