Veterans Memorial Bridge traffic to be restricted

The Veterans Memorial Bridge at Hickory Street will be treated with linseed oil this week.

City of Warren Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke said traffic on the bridge will be restricted through Saturday.

“The Hickory Street Bridge will have lane closures Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week,” Reinke said. “The DPW will be linseed oiling the bridge.”

Linseed oil is a commonly-used sealant that protects concrete and enhances its resistance to damage over the winter.

“On Wednesday, we will do the northbound lane and the east walkway,” Reinke said.

There will not be any detours.

“Traffic will be able to flow both ways.” he said.

The lane changes will result in the elimination of the turning lanes on the bridge for the duration of the project. There could be delays and those concerned about them are advised to find alternate routes.

Also on Friday, the department will work with Huber Blacktop to make short-term improvements to East Fifth Avenue.

“We’re trying to keep closures to one block at a time,” Reinke said. “Expect closure somewhere on that road throughout the day on Friday.”

That work is expected to be completed on Friday, weather permitting.

That stretch of road is on the city’s calendar for milling and paving in 2021 using federal transportation dollars. Friday’s work is an attempt to improve conditions until that project.
