New tech aimed at limiting power outages

Penelec is bringing new technology to its system aimed specifically at limiting power outages.

The device is called a “TripSaver” and Penelec plans to install over 2,000 across its service area, including over 30 in the Warren area.

“When we talk about smart grid, Penelec’s new TripSaver devices are definitely part of the conversation,” Todd Myers, senior communication representative with FirstEnergy said. “They can sense a problem such as a tree branch coming into contact with the line and temporarily interrupt the power before equipment is damaged causing a lengthy outage.”

Information from Penelec indicates that the devices are installed on neighborhood distribution lines that branch from the main line service an area.

“But unlike a fuse that simply pops open when something contacts the line and requires a line worker to roll a truck to investigate the problem,” Myers added, “the TripSaver has the smarts to restore the power if the branch or other object clears the line, preventing an outage.”

And that can all occur in a matter of seconds.

“If the TripSaver senses a more serious issue, such as a fallen tree on the power line, it will isolate the outage in that area and limit the total number of affected customers,” a statement from Penelec explains. “The device’s smart technology quickly pinpoints the location of the electrical fault and helps utility personnel better understand the cause of the outage to help speed restoration.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
