Community Foundation announces MacKenzie scholarship winners

Alex Benjamin

The Community Foundation of Warren County has announced the 2020 recipients of its prestigious MacKenzie Scholarships.

Since 2015, the Foundation has honored Dr. Charles MacKenzie by awarding scholarships in his name to outstanding Warren County high school graduates.

“For 20 years Dr. Charles E. MacKenzie served as Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Warren County,” Executive Director John Lasher said. “During that time Dr. MacKenzie worked diligently to increase the number of scholarships awarded to Warren County Students pursuing post-secondary educational opportunities.”

MacKenzie was directly involved in increasing the number of scholarships, the amounts of scholarships, and with the selection of the recipients.

“He also worked with the Foundation Board of Directors to increase the dollar amounts of the scholarships awarded,” Lasher said. “Dr. MacKenzie worked with every scholarship selection committee and personally supervised all the programs of the Foundation.”

“When Dr. MacKenzie retired from the Foundation in 2015, the Board decided to honor him by naming a scholarship program for him,” he said. “The Charles E. MacKenzie Scholarship award is based on scholarship, citizenship, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.”

“Each school’s guidance department nominates three graduating seniors who exhibit these qualities to be considered for the award,” Lasher said. The Foundation then selects one student from each submitting school for the award.

“The Community Foundation of Warren County is proud to announce this year’s recipients of the Dr. Charles E. MacKenzie Scholarship,” Lasher said.

The recipient from Sheffield Area High School is Alex Benjamin.

The recipient from Warren Area High School is Naomi Hahn.
