City Council approves more pickleball courts at Beaty Park

Pickleball players in Warren will have more court options as a result of action taken this week by Warren City Council.

Two additional courts are coming to Beaty Park.

Department of Public Works Director Mike Holtz said that plans were originally to line all three tennis courts at Beaty with pickleball lines but said that wasn’t completed because it would invalidate the courts for Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA, or high school) play.

He said there has been a “steady increase” in pickleball participation while also noting that the high school team is only utilizing the courts at Betts Park.

Councilman John Wortman asked if a reservation system is not feasible and Holtz indicated it was not.

“Until we see there’s a need,” City Manager Nancy Freenocks added, noting that there would be “no enforcement mechanism” unless the city’s parks and recreation ordinance was amended. She said the players say they “can self regulate.”

She said the tennis court closest to Conewango Ave. at Beaty Park will remain tennis-only. Currently, one of the three courts is painted for pickleball.

Marlene Sandberg told council there is a “great need for two new courts. The flow would be so much better” and be able to accommodate more people.

“Anything we can do to promote health and fitness for the elderly would be great,” she said.

It was recommended that the pickleball lines be painted neon green.

Council unanimously approved the change.

Starting at $4.00/week.
