Policy waived to hold virtual meeting

Monday wasn’t the first time Warren County School District board members have called in to a meeting.

However, it was the first time a majority of them did so.

The district has a policy regarding participation in meetings without being physically present.

The policy limits that kind of attendance to two per member per year because, “the board believes that an absent member participating by electronic means can be hindered in his or her interaction by the inability to review documents, observe presentations made to the board and similar difficulties.”

Special meetings of the board and executive sessions are exempted from the numerical limit, but language in the policy states that electronic participation is only permissible if the “member’s absence is necessary.”

The board waived those restrictions on Monday in the interest of social distancing.

Under situations in which electronic participation is not possible or if the technology does not allow for effective participation, the policy prevents electronic participation.

The board waived the policy for Monday’s meeting.
