North Warren man charged for alleged BB gun firing

A North Warren man faces charges for allegedly shooting windows at Warren State Hospital with a BB gun over three days.

Brenden D. VanGuilder, 19, of North Warren, is charged with two counts of possessing the instrument of a crime; three counts of institutional vandalism; three counts of loitering and prowling at night; and six counts of criminal mischief.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, officers were called to Warren State Hospital on Monday, Feb. 24 on a report of damage to the window of a van on the grounds, and on Tuesday, Feb. 25, for several more broken windows, two of them in a Transit Authority of Warren County bus stop.

Police said security video showed a person near the van at 3:29 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.

Video from 3:07 a.m. Tuesday showed a man, whose clothing matched the description from the day before, who “appeared to raise a BB gun in the direction of the TAWC bus stop,” police said. “I observed the bus stop glass break on the video.”

Video from Walmart showed a person wearing the same clothing there at 3:19 a.m., according to the affidavit of probable cause, and police were able to identify VanGuilder from that video.

At 3 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, VanGuilder called 911 to report that a van was following him on Warren State Hospital property, police said. He reportedly called back at 3:09 in an attempt to cancel the response.

According to the affidavit, Warren State Hospital personnel made a call of their own, reporting a man matching the description from the previous events.

Police said a BB gun was recovered on the grounds on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Police interviewed VanGuilder late Wednesday, Feb. 26. According to police, “VanGuilder admitted he shot several windows and the TAWC bus stop windows with a BB gun. VanGuilder admitted to shooting windows with his BB gun on all three nights.”

According to the affidavit, “12 windows were damaged by suspected BB gun punctures and two TAWC bus stop windows were broken.” The total damage is estimated at $1,910.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 8.
