DEP follows up on oil spill

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry Booms and pads soak up oil at what appears to be the origin of a Saturday spill along the railroad tracks at Preston Run in Starbrick. Some oil from the spill reached the Allegheny River.

The Department of Environmental Protection will continue to investigate the spill that created a visible sheen Saturday on the Allegheny River at Starbrick.

According to DEP Community Relations Coordinator Tom Decker, an investigator will visit the scene on Tuesday.

Not a lot of detail was available Monday.

“This was a petroleum-based product,” Decker said. “It only takes a small amount to create the sheen, so we do not know at this time how much was released.”

The product flowed in a ditch along the railroad tracks, entered a small tributary, and flowed into the river east of Preston Run Road. The sheen on the river was limited to the area immediately around the confluence.

Responders from Starbrick Volunteer Fire Department, Warren County All-Hazards Team, and DEP placed booms and pads to restrict the flow of the product.

“We were able to track it back to the possible source location, but were unable to determine exactly what caused this,” Decker said.
