Bail reduction denied for Sheffield man jailed on child porn

The bail amount set for a Sheffield man charged with 100 counts of child pornography remains at $200,000 following a Friday hearing.

John R. Castor, 30, of Sheffield, remains in Warren County jail following his arrest by Pennsylvania State Police on Aug. 21 on 50 second-degree-felony counts of child pornography and one felony count of criminal use of a communications facility.

Police said in the affidavit of probable cause that a search of Castor’s electronic devices turned up “hundreds” of still and video images of child pornography.

Warren County Assistant Public Defender Mike Kitay, representing Castor, asked Judge Gregory Hammond to reconsider the bail amount.

Warren County District Attorney Rob Greene argued that bail is maintained at the set level.

“His charges are extremely serious,” Greene said. “We believe he is a threat to society if he is released.”

“His danger to the community and the seriousness of the charges make the amount of bail completely appropriate,” Hammond said in denying the motion.
