Urinating in courthouse cell adds charges for Y’ville man

A Youngsville man who was jailed earlier this month on charges of aggravated assault is now facing charges related to urinating in a courthouse holding cell.

Adam L. Smith, 34, of Youngsville, was charged Thursday with two counts of aggravated harassment by prisoner, institutional vandalism, and two counts of disorderly conduct.

According to a Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to escorting prisoners to and from Warren County jail to central court hearings in the courthouse basement, Smith and another male prisoner were in a holding cell on Wednesday, Aug. 14, when Smith told him he needed to use the restroom.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the deputy told Smith he had to make arrangements — including making sure victims and witnesses in Smith’s case were not in the hall and making sure the bathroom was not in use — before he could take Smith out of the holding cell.

“I returned to the holding cell… and found that Smith had urinated all over the bench and carpeted floor while the other male that was in custody was approximately three to four feet away from Smith,” the deputy wrote in the affidavit. “Smith advised me he had to pee and stated that when he told me he had to go, I did not do anything about it.”

“Smith became agitated as I now felt taking him to the bathroom would not be in the best interest as far as safety for myself or the other officers assisting,” according to the affidavit. “Minutes later, I went into the holding cell to retrieve the other male and observed Smith had urinated again on the carpeted floor.”
