ANF celebrates Wild and Scenic Rivers Act

The Allegheny National Forest will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act on Tuesday.

Two rivers that run through the forest, the Allegheny and the Clarion, are designated under the act.

A scale model timber raft built by volunteers at the Toy Shoppe on the grounds of Warren State Hospital will be on public display for the first time. The raft is a replica of those used during the 19th century to float timber down the two rivers to points of sale downstream, according to an ANF release.

“The raft is the creation of a joint effort between the Toy Shoppe of Warren, Penn Soil Resource Conservation and Development Council, Eastern National Forests Interpretive Association, and the Allegheny National Forest,” according to the release.

“The unveiling of the scale model timber raft will occur 50 years to the day after President Lyndon B. Johnson made his remarks upon signing four bills related to conservation and outdoor recreation, including both the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the National Trails System Act,” according to the release. “The ceremony is open to the public and will begin at 1 p.m.” at the Marienville Ranger District office, 131 Smokey Lane, Marienville.

Starting at $3.50/week.
