Jamestown police release video of dog shooting

Photo submitted to Times Observer A still shot from a video at 222 Winsor St ., Jamestown, N.Y., prior to a dog attack on officers. Police said, “We are releasing this (video) to clarify any questions regarding this incident.” The video (with a ‘Warning...’ message) has been posted on the Times Observer Facebook page.

JAMESTOWN, NY — Hoping to quash speculation, the Jamestown Police Department released surveillance video Thursday of an officer shooting a dog that charged without warning during a warrant check at a city home.

The video’s release comes a day after two officers were looking for an undisclosed man wanted on an outstanding warrant at 222 Winsor St.

Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said as the officers were approaching the home a pitbull-mastiff mix charged the pair, prompting one of them to shoot the animal. The dog was taken to a nearby veterinary office but later died. No person was injured in the incident.

The 10-second surveillance video without sound was taken from a neighbor’s home across the street and shows the two officers walking toward the Winsor Street property. At the 7-second mark of the video, the dog appears from the left-side of the home and charges the officers.

Neither officer appeared to notice the dog until it is seen on video approaching them.

One of the officers is seen in the video removing his firearm from its holster and quickly fire two rounds -marked by white puffs of smoke – at the dog. A car parked on the roadblocks the firing of the second shot from camera view.

Samuelson said the department released the video to remove any doubt that the dog charged the officers and that the shooting was necessary to prevent serious injury.

“We wanted to release the video to clarify some of the questions that are out there,” Samuelson told The Post-Journal. “The video also showed that the dog was wandering around prior without a leash to police arriving.”

“It’s pretty clear that the dog charges – it’s disturbing,” he continued. “It’s pretty clear the dog was not friendly.”

The dog’s owner, who was not identified, was issued a summons late Wednesday for having a dog-at-large that attacks. The code violation also includes a $50 fine.

Starting at $3.50/week.
