Automated Red Light Enforcement funds making way to county

Fines from people blowing through red lights in Philadelphia are making their way to Warren County

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Friday that 21 municipalities will receive a total of $6 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funds which will go to 27 different projects.

Of that total, $15,493 is coming to Tidioute Borough “to install four solar flashing school zone beacons to improve student and resident safety within the school zone along Main Street and Jefferson Street.”

“Keeping people moving is about more than improving roads and bridges – it also includes ensuring that traffic signals are operating as efficiently as possible,” Wolf said. “These investments help communities bring their signals to today’s standards and better respond to traffic demands today and in the future.”

According to PennDOT, the funds are generated “from red light violations at 30 intersections in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.”

The funds can then be used for projects that improve safety, enhance mobility and reduce congestion.

Municipalities, according to PennDOT, submitted over 140 applications totaling $29.8 million in potential projects.

“Projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact and cost sharing,” PennDOT said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
