Bike race takes a turn with proposed road work
Proposed work on Longhouse Scenic Drive next year would force a move for one bicycle race, but shouldn’t affect the bicycle portion of the Tango.
John Papalia, Jr. said the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry board at its meeting Tuesday morning held a discussion on possible other routes for the Kinzua Classic road race.
“There is an abundance of scenic roadways in Warren County, and we are looking at options,” he said.
The current route starts at Kinzua Beach, heads out Route 59, then turns right onto Route 321, and again turns right onto Longhouse before finishing at Jakes Rocks. There are two versions, a single 30-mile lap and two laps for a 60-mile race.
“These things happen. You have to be flexible when planning events,” Papalia added.
In previous years, Family Services of Warren County planned and sponsored the race, and after the organization moved on to other projects, the WCCBI took over the responsibility and restarted the race this year.
A portion of the Tango, on the other hand, is more of a hybrid road race, according to YMCA Director and Tango founder Thad Turner.
“We only used a little bit of Longhouse, then went up Jakes Rocks Road,” he said. He added the opening of the Jakes Rocks Mountain Bike Trails will also be an asset to the race.
“Next year, we’re hoping to make it a two-day event, but (the construction) shouldn’t have an impact,” he said.
A U.S. Forest Service press release earlier this week said, “During construction, portions of the road will be closed and detours to recreation sites will be established. As construction plans are developed, additional public notifications will be issued.”
The document also indicates that “this will be a three to four year construction project.”
