County Academic Bowl all about bragging rights
Just because Friday’s Academic Bowl competition prize at Youngsville High School was bragging rights doesn’t mean the competition wasn’t stiff.
YHS Academic Bowl advisor Gary Monza organized a county-wide competition to close out the season featuring YHS, Warren Area High School and Sheffield Area High School. Eisenhower High School’s team was unable to attend.
Typically the teams compete at Jamestown Community College on live radio. Friday’s was a bracket-based competition with teams answering questions about “everything under the sun” WAHS team member Robin Thomas said.
“It’s a lot less stressful,” added teammate Megan Moore.
Questions included geography, history, math, science, mythology and even sports.
“It’s definitely a lot more laid back,” Thomas agreed.
Youngsville team member Alex Sanford said that while the official competitions are “far more professional,” he was glad that Friday’s competition was a reality.
“It’s something that Youngsville should definitely keep around and that more kids should enjoy,” said Sanford.
The friendly competition, Monza said, was to help spread the word.
“I love Academic Bowl because it supports and grows academic growth,” he said.
WAHS advisor Jewel Rozanski said, “There aren’t too many chances to compete, so we wanted to give our kids one more chance.”
