Brokenstraw Pool opening on Saturday

The Brokenstraw Valley Pool is gearing up for summer.

Lee Bryan, pool director said, “There’s a lot of good things going on.”

He said the pool has a new manager, Barb Lutton, who used to be a lifeguard at the pool.

The pool will open on Saturday, June 13 with a Community Day, sponsored by the Youngsville Recreation Committee and the Friends of the Brokenstraw Valley Pool. Bryan said the pool will be open from 1 to 8 p.m., and it will be free to the public. “Marty’s Bubble Gum Machine will be here from 2 to 4 p.m., and there will be free hot dogs and games,” he said.

He said the World’s Largest Swim Lesson will be held on June 18, to attempt a new Guiness World Record. The international event has set five records in the past five years, with 36,564 participants in 22 countries, according to the WLSL website. Bryan said the event was designed to draw attention to the need to learn how to swim.

On Monday through Thursday nights, there will be water aerobics and lap swims from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., and on special event Thursday nights, the pool will reopen at 6:30 p.m.

The first movie night of the year will also be held on June 18 at dark, and the movie will be Dolphin Tales 2. Bryan said people from the Boonies Film Festival come up and show movies for the events.

On July 2, there will be be the annual Luau, with “lots of fun games and activities,” he said. The girls will wear grass skirts, there will be a limbo contest and a Jimmy Buffett movie.

Another movie night will be held on July 16, with the feature Mutant Ninja Turtles.

On a Thursday in August, the pool will hold the Corny Kickoff, to get the Youngsville Corn Fest.

“Our last event will actually be held after the pool closes for the year,” Bryan said. “On August 29 will be the doggie dip where people can bring their dogs to swim. They love it.”

Pool hours will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. “We had to modify our hours, because swim lessons will be from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,” he said. “On Fridays and Saturdays, it’s 1 to 8 p.m. and Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m.

Season passes are available at the Youngsville Borough building. A family pass is $120, an adult pass is $85, students and seniors, $75. Bryan said there is also a “babysitter” pass available for $35.

Single day fees are $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. He said the pool also has a ten-inch deep baby pool, where mothers can sit with children for free.
