Allegheny Reservoir Cleanup May 9; Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Allegheny Reservoir Cleanup Day slated for May 9.

A release from Allegheny National Forest headquarters issued Thursday announced the event and the need for volunteers.

“Our reservoir cleanup days would not be successful without all the hard work of our many dedicated volunteers,” said Nathan Welker, Allegheny National Forest fisheries biologist and an event organizer.

And those volunteers have hauled a wide-variety of junk off the shoreline of the Reservoir.

“Volunteers have donated more than 5,000 hours and have removed more than 166 cubic yards of trash over the years,” the release states. “They have pulled out television sets; microwave ovens; lawn chairs; refrigerators; 55-gallon drums, more than 350 tires and have filled many bags of recyclable metal, glass, plastic and aluminum.”

Welker said this year’s cleanup day will focus primarily on cleaning up the reservoir’s northern shorelines. He said the need for groups and individuals to volunteer remains great.

“Thanks to our volunteers, the reservoir is a much safer and cleaner place for wildlife and recreationists than when we began 11 years ago,” Welker said.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this project can either go to alleghenyrivercleanup.com or send an email to info@alleghenyrivercleanup.com.

The ANF says that the deadline to sign up for the event is Friday, May 1.

Starting at $3.50/week.
