Goodbye, Kmart

Kmart is closing it’s store in the Warren Mall in early December, leaving 62 employees without jobs and just six store fronts occupied in the mall.

Kmart will begin liquidation on Sunday and remain open until Dec. 7. Employees who are eligible will receive severance and can apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the employees are part-time hourly workers.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail at the store, online and in the home,” the company said in a press release.

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart stores, lost nearly a billion dollars during the first half of the year. Kmart in Jamestown, N.Y., will remain open, the company said.

Warren Mall owner Mike Kohan said Kmart’s lease extends into late 2015.

“I don’t know why Kmart’s leaving, I don’t think the sales were that bad,” he said. “I tried to talk to them to stay, and they didn’t. We’re certainly going to start looking for a new perspective tenant to come in.”

Kohan did say a lease has been signed for a “major chain store” to occupy the former Big Lots location sometime before April of next year.

“It’s going to be great for the community,” he said.

With the departure of Kmart, Big Lots, and the Goodwill store the mall will only have six remaining businesses – Label Shopper, Kinzua County Auction, The Bon-Ton, Master Cuts, Lee’s Nails, and Napoli Pizza.

The directory of the Warren Mall lists 68 store fronts, seven of which are currently in use until Kmart closes in December. Also listed are a number of stores that have left the mall in between owners and gives a glimpse of how the mall has declined in recent years. Those that have left include: Dollar General, Shoe Department, Electronic Boutique, Sterling Optical, Kay Jewelers, Northwest Savings, Bath & Body Works, Radio Shack, Ponderosa, General Nutrition, FYI, Aladdin’s Castle, Payless Shoes, Tina’s Hallmark, Waldenbooks, Best Nails, Claire’s Boutique, Cellular One and Fashion Bug.
