Deadline approaches for Youngsville High School alumni

Its count down time for Youngsville High School’s annual Alumni Coming Home Dinner/Dance on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The dinner reservation deadline is Friday. The Oct. 1 evening event is being held at the Youngsville Fire Hall starting with the dinner buffet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Dinner reservations are required for the dinner and dance at a cost of $22 a person. Reservations are to be mailed to Brad Thompson, 230 College St., Youngsville, PA 16371. Include name and class of all attending along with check payable to: YHS Coming Home Committee.

For the dance only from 8:30 to 11 p.m., the cost is only $10 per person and doors open at 8 p.m. for those interested in the dance only. The dance portion is open to the general public. Trixx will perform. The dance is bring-your-own-alcohol and will include a mixer and snacks.

Various Class reunions are being held, such as YHS Classes of 1962, 1966, 1967 and 1972. The Class of 1972 has reserved a private room at the fire hall and others are grouped by class. Additional weekend events, open to all Youngsville High School classes and the public, start on Friday, Sept. 30, with a campfire from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Youngsville Free Methodist Church pavilion on Davis Street. Bring a snack to share as well as non-alcoholic beverages and a lawn chair.

Saturday, Oct. 1, is the alumni breakfast at Station 61 Restaurant in Youngsville at 9 a.m. The side room is reserved.

PICKLEBALL

“CLASSES”

The use of the new public pickleball courts at Island park is on the rise. There has also been an increase in the number of people stopping by to participate in the beginner/new player “classes” that are being offered on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Classes are not formal classes and those attending don’t have to sign up or register. Players also don’t have to play the whole time. Pickleball equipment is also available for use during these class times.

Classes where one can learn about the rules, the basics of how to play in a very casual atmosphere and meet others who are interested in playing pick-up pickleball games in the future are available in September and October. Upcoming dates are Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 21, Oct. 5 and Oct. 12; Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 22 and Oct. 13; and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8.

It is also possible to borrow pickleball paddles and balls from the Youngsville YMCA at Island Park. Those borrowing equipment do not need to be a YMCA member. LIBRARY NEWS

The next Youngsville Library book club meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 3 to 4 p.m. The book to be discussed is: “The Only Woman in the Room” by Marie Benedict. The book club meets the second Tuesday of each month. FUNDRAISERS

BBQ Chicken: The Youngsville Sons of the American Legion is having a barbecue chicken fundraiser today starting at noon. The cost is $12.

Polish Dinner: Youngsville’s St. Luke church is having a Polish dinner fundraiser on Oct. 9 from noon to 3 p.m. Dinners are take-out only and include two cabbage rolls, three perogies, scoop of Kluski casserole and slice of nut roll. The cost is $15. Tickets are pre-sale only and are available at the Youngsville Public Library on Monday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., by callin gMary at 814-563-4010, at the St Luke Church office in Youngsville or the St. Joseph Church office in Warren.

BBQ Take-out: A barbecue take-out meal will be held at the EUM Church on Second Street. Dinner includes a pulled pork sandwich, corn on the cob, coleslaw and dessert for a $10 donation. Pick-up day for the barbecue meal is Saturday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. Orders are pre-sale only and can be ordered by calling 814-563-4351 through Wednesday. Goulash Dinner: A benefit dinner for the Warren County Veterans Council Emergency Fund will be held at the Cabin In the Pines, 37030 Route 6, Spring Creek, from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Dinners are available dine-in or take-out for a $10 donation. Other fundraising events will take place during dinner. All proceeds will benefit the Emergency Fund. Tickets are available at Cabin In the Pines, Rusted Nutz Garage or the Warren County Veterans Affairs Office.

Night at the Races: Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. a Night at the Races will be held at the Youngsville Fire Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool. Only those over the age of 21 can attend. In addition to wagers on videotaped horse racing, there will be door prizes, pull tabs and 50-50 giveaways. All wagers are a $2 minimum with payouts determined by number of winning tickets. Alcohol is permitted and light snacks will be provided.

LUNCHEON

The Warren County Visitors Bureau is hosting a luncheon for those who manage overnight accommodations in Warren County, such as beds and breakfasts, hotels, inns, and Airbnbs so the Visitors Bureau can introduce its offerings, distribute items for guests and accept promotional material to support area business. There will be a light lunch at noon Friday, Sept. 30. Those attending should bring promotional materials such as brochures, fliers, business cards, and/or any other materials to show off their business. Reservations are requested by Sept. 26 by calling 814-726-1222 or emailing director@wcvb.net.

NATIONAL FORGE

EXHIBIT

The Wilder Museum of Warren County History will be presenting a National Forge Exhibit and Open House on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum, 51 Erie Ave., Irvine. The exhibit will honor the history of the National Forge, including machinery, equipment, photos and a 1963 Mercedes Benz. The Wilder Museum’s regular hours are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October. For more information contact 814-563-7773 or 814-723-1795.

Turkey Shoot: Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club will host a turkey shoot on its Mead Run Road property. The shoot is open to the public. For more information, visit facebook.com/Brokenstrawfishandgameclub.

Free Vascular Screening: Free DARE to C.A.R.E. Vascular Screening will be held at the Days Inn on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. for individuals over 50. This is a free screen to help detect vascular disease. To register call 814-723-4973, ext. 2065 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
