PICKLEBALL CLASSES SCHEDULED IN YOUNGSIVLLE

Youngsville-area pickleball is off to a great start. Thanks to the hard work and time by a couple of volunteers, Island Park now has two Pickleball courts available for public use.

Pickleball is one of the fasting-growing sports for good reason: the court size is half that of tennis, it’s great exercise, and can be enjoyed by all ages from children to seniors. Those who are new to pickleball but are interested in learning about the rules and the basics of how to play — in a very casual atmosphere — can do so on specific days when someone will be there to teach in Youngsville. These are not formal classes and those interested don’t have to sign up or register. Those interested also don’t have to stay the whole time, just swing by.

Classes are held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, or Wednesday, Sept. 21, or 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 or Sept. 22. Another set of classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 and Sept. 24.

Those who don’t have Pickleball equipment but want to try the sport can borrow pickleball paddles and balls from the Youngsville YMCA at Island Park. Those asking for equipmnet do not need to be a YMCA member to borrow the pickleball equipment. Contact the Youngsville YMCA at 814-802-1618 for details.

LIBRARY NEWS

Book Sale: Today is the Youngsville Library’s annual one-day book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, dessert and drinks will be available for $5 from 11 a.m. until sold out. In addition to DVDs, Christian fiction and children’s books there is also a big selection of large print books to choose from, popular fiction authors and all sorts of genre from cook books to mysteries. The annual book sale is one of the library’s major fundraisers.

Crafts from the Friends of the Library will also be available for purchase. At the craft table there will be a selection of decorative lighted bottles, melted glass spoon holders, lamps, wind chimes, ornaments, battery-candle jars, and much more.

Story Time: Tuesday, Sept. 13, join Friend of the Library Diane Danielson for Youngsville Library’s monthly story time from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Targeted ages are 3-5 years, but all are welcome. No registration is required to participate. Story time includes stories, songs, dancing and activities. Story time is held the seocnd Tuesday of each month.

Free Job Workshops: On Wednesday, Danielle Ditz will hold three separate career development workshops at the Youngsville Public Library.

The first workshop is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and focuses on SkillUP PA. The session is an in-person session with walk-ins welcome. SkillUP PA provides access to more than 6,000 free, online skills training courses to help you prepare for a new career path, enhance a worker’s existing skill-set and more.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Ditz will have an open, walk-in question-and-answer session. Ask personalized questions regarding job searches, PA CareerLink, free job training opportunities, and more. No registration is needed.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Ditz will lead “Resume Do’s & Dont’s,” a workshop available for in-person, virtual, or by-phone attendance. The workshop does require registration by calling Ditz at 814-272-4020 or emailing Danielle.Ditz@NWPACareerLink.org.

Free Community Event: “Tall Cop Says Stop” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Warren Area High School. Hosted by the Youngsville Police Department, the event is paid for by FWMWA systems of Care. Officer Galloway has nearly 20 years of experience in law enforcement and much of that time has been spent focused on combating underage drinking and drug abuse. His presentations address underage drinking and drug problems and how to fight them within a community.

Everyday items that you might not take a second look at will take on a new meaning. The presentation will address: new drugs, logos and other identifiers, pictures, songs, and clothing connected to drugs, potential stash compartments, vaping, and more. FUNDRAISERS

Night at the Races: Night at the Races will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Youngsville Fire Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. and proceeds benefit the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool. Those attending must be 21 years of age to attend. Wager on videotaped horse racing. There will be door prizes, payouts for win, place and show finishers in races. All wagers are a $2 minimum with payouts determined by the number of winning tickets. The event is bring-your-own-booze with light snacks provided. There will also be pull tabs and 50/50 giveaways.

Barbecue: A barbecue take-out will be held at the EUM Church on Second Street, with dinners including a pulled pork sandwich, corn on the cob, coleslaw and dessert for a $10 donation. Pick-up day is Saturday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are pre-sale only. To order a barbecue meal for pickup, call 814-563-4351. Orders will be taken from Sept. 10 through Sept. 20.

Chicken BBQ: A chicken barbecue will be held today starting at noon to raise money for the Garland Volunteer Fire Department at Friendship Field in Pittsfield. All dinners are to-go or by drive-through. A full dinner is a $12 donation and includes a one-half of a barbecue chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans and a roll. Chicken only is a $10 donation.
