Youngsville American Legion sponsors essay contest

Each year the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for student in third through 12th grades, including students with special needs. Grade levels are divided into six classes:

¯ Class 1 — third and fourth grades

¯ Class 2 — fifth and sixth grades

¯ Class 3 — seventh and eighth grades

¯ Class 4 — ninth and 10th grades

¯ Class 5 — 11th and 12th grades; and

¯ Class 6 — students with special needs.

Word count requirements for the essay are dependent upon the class/grade level. The point system for judging is: 50% content, 20% English, 10% originality, 10% neatness and 10% spelling. Each essay submission must include a completed 2022 National Essay Contest Cover sheet. Downloadable copies of the 2022 Contest Cover Sheet and essay details are available on the YoungsvilleLibrary.org website and hard copies are available at the Youngsville Public Library Mondays and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 563-7670 and Youngsville area schools.

This year’s essay title is: “How Can We Support Families Who Provide Care To Their Veterans?” Essays must be submitted to the Youngsville American Legion Auxiliary by Feb. 22. There are three cash prizes awarded at the local level (Youngsville American Legion Auxiliary) for each class. The first place prize is $75, second place is $50, and third place is $25. Winning essays will then be submitted to the American Legion Auxiliary at the national level.

CAREERLINK WORKSHOPS

Wednesday, January 26, Rebecca Whitney will hold three separate career development workshops at the Youngsville Library. A walk-in session will be held from noon to 1 p.m. to ask personalized questions regarding job searches, PA CareerLInk, free job training opportunities, and more. No registration is needed.

From 1 to 2 p.m. a “Budgeting 101” workshop will be held that includes how to take hold of one’s financial future with tips on how to start and maintain a budget. Then, from 2 to 3 p.m., “Resume Do’s & Don’ts” will be held to teach the basics of resume writing. The session is an information session only but those who can set up follow-up appointments at a later date and time for individualized resume assistance. Registrations are required for the Budgeting 101 & Resume Do’s & Don’ts workshops. Attend in-person at the Youngsville Public Library, virtually, or by cell or landline. BINGO

Bingo night at Garland Fire Hall on Monday, Feb. 7. Doors and kitchen open at 4 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6 p.m. The cost is a $30 donation for all-you-can-play on a regular card. Additional games will be played too. The Garland Volunteer Fire Department is holding its annual Pig Raffle (a whole pig cut and wrapped, processed by Upton Farms). The donation is $1 per ticket and tickets are now available. The drawing date is Feb. 13. For tickets see any Garland Volunteer Fire Department member or stop by the fire hall on Sunday mornings or Tuesday evenings.

CEMETERY NEWS

The Youngsville Cemetery committee would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted with cemetery maintenance and upkeep in 2021. The 2022 cemetery committee is looking for additional volunteers to assist with mowing, trimmings, and general brush/stick removal and upkeep for 2022. Cemetery maintenance will begin in April. Volunteers who are willing to help monthly, weekly, or bi-weekly in any capacity will be appreciated. Questions/interested contact Rick McKinney at 814-563-9904.
