Schedule of events, menu released for area’s senior centers

Christy Elicker will teach a crafting class starting at 1 p.m. Oct. 20, with a focus on making fun decorations for a spooky Halloween. Registration is available for the session.

Also coming up is tax season, where the Allegheny Community Center will again be providing free tax services. Free tax preparation is available to anyone in the community that makes less than $65,000 per year. Tax services will be completed virtually due to COVID.

Those who have an interest in becoming a VITA tax volunteer are welcome to volunteer. For more information, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX8ZYt9C8jU.

Lastly, free blood pressure screenings will be held at three of the area senior centers — 10 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month at Tidioute, 10:30 a.m. the last Thursday of the month in Sheffield and 11 a.m. the last Monday of the month at the Allegheny Community Center.

LOOKING FOR KNITTERS, CROCHETERS

The Allegheny Community Center has received many gifts of yarn.

Last year the center gave away many handmade items created by senior citizens to local organizations that were very appreciative of the donation, time and effort. Those interested in knitting and crocheting items from some of the donated yarn can come in and pick out some yarn, work on it at the center or take it home.

Community center officials will make sure donations are received by the recipient organization. For more information, call the Allegheny Community Center at 814-723-4180.

RECIPE SHARING HAS BEGUN, GENEALOGY VOLUNTEER SOUGHT

The “make it and take it” class is a way to enjoy each other’s company and make something with a favorite recipe. Organizers ask seniors to bring a recipe that the group can prepare and share.

Among recipes organizers hope will be shared are baked goodies, entrees for two and recipes that everyone always ask to be made. The food will be enjoyed and may be turned into an Allegheny Community Center calendar.

Those who plan to attend are asked to call 814-723-4180.

The Allegheny Community Center is looking for a volunteer to share their genealogy knowledge during one class per week. Those interested are asked to call the center at 814-723-4180.

Also, the Allegheny Community Center has children’s books that can be borrowed and shared with grandchildren. All books wil be sanitized for 72 hours before they are circulated again.
