Dare to join the brave souls who will be taking a giant leap into the winter waters of the Brokenstraw Creek at Island Park in Youngsville on Saturday, Feb. 15, to support Love INC’s 8th Annual “Leap for Love” Fundraiser.

Registration is at 10:30 a.m., Leap is at 11 a.m. The cost to leap is a $10 donation benefiting Love INC. Those that register will be treated to a nice toasty fire, a bowl of chili, coffee, cookies, and hot chocolate. Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes, too! If you’re not into taking the jump into frigid temperatures, come out to show your support for Love INC of Warren County and the work they do to address poverty in our community through a relationship-based, transformational approach.

EUM organist/pianist needed

The Evangelical United Methodist Church in Youngsville is seeking a part-time organist/pianist for Sunday worship services, special holiday services, and occasional services (such as wedding or funerals). Essay Contest for Area Students

The Youngsville American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring an essay contest for grades 3 through 12 in the Youngsville area. The title this year is “How can we address the health and well-being of our veterans, military, and their families?” The requirements for any student that would like to participate are by grade level/class level are: Class 1st-3rd and 4th grade: 150-250 words; Class 2nd-5th and 6th grade: 250-300 words; Class 3rd-7th and 8th grade: 350-400 words; Class 4th-9th and 10th grade: 450-500 words; and, Class 5th-11th and 12th grade: 450-500 words. For Class 6 (students with special needs), the word count should correspond with the student’s grade level.

The following point system will be used for judging: 50% Content, 20% English, 10% Originality, 10% Neatness, and 10% Spelling.

Each essay must have the National Essay Contest Cover Sheet attached. The cover sheet and information can be picked up at the school or guidance office at each school in the Youngsville Area or can be downloaded from the Youngsville Public Library website at www.YoungsvilleLibrary.org (community news tab), hard copies are also available at the Youngsville Public Library.

Prizes will be awarded for first ($75), second ($50), and third ($25) places in each class at the local level.

All essays are due on Friday, Feb. 28.

Essays with cover sheet can be dropped off at the school office, the Youngsville American Legion (or mailed to the Youngsville American Legion, 10 North Main Street, Attn: Auxiliary Essay Contest), or dropped off at the Youngsville Public Library (100 Broad Street).

Free community meals menu

Free Community Meals at the JoyFull Cafe are usually held every Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Youngsville Free Methodist Church (179 Davis Street). Each of the meals are planned, prepared, and served by volunteers. February menu is as follows: February 12th — Chili & Grilled Cheese; February 19th — Meatloaf, mashed potatoes & gravy, and green beans; and February 26th — Creamy garlic pasta & salad bar.

All meals are subject to change but changes are posted on the church website (ybfree.org) or on their Facebook page. If you are interested in helping with meal service, meal preparation, or would like to donate towards the cafe pantry, contact the church office at office@ybfree.org.

Community Blood Bank

Community Blood Bank will be at the Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from noon to 5 p.m.

Borough Holiday Hours

The Youngsville Borough office and services will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17, in honor of President’s Day. Monday garbage pickup will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, and Tuesday garbage pickup will be Wednesday, Feb. 19. Contact the borough office (814)563-4604 with questions.

Lenten Fish Fry Dinners

The Youngsville Free Methodist Church’s Annual Lenten Fish Fry Dinners (179 Davis Street) will be held every Friday during Lent from 5 to 7 p.m. The first one begins on Friday, Feb. 28. Proceeds from the dinners help support their Missions Outreach. The cost is a $10 donation per meal which includes: fish, choice of potato (baked or fries), choice of coleslaw or applesauce, roll, dessert, and drink. Take out is available. Free Resume Writing Workshop at Library

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., a free workshop will be held at the Youngsville Public Library.

The focus will be “Do’s & Don’ts of Resume Writing,” but one-on-one issues, questions, and concerns about employment, etc. will also be addressed for those attending. You do not have to preregister to attend and walk-ins are encouraged. If you are receiving unemployment benefits, attending this workshop will count towards one of your job requirement activities. If it’s been a while since you’ve created a resume, things have really changed. Career Link staff member, Rebecca Whitney (TEF) will give you simple tips for creating a resume to target potential employers. Most jobs get hundreds of applications and your resume has to do more, faster than ever.

Rebecca Whitney can also assist you with learning about other Career Link Services/JobGateway features and as well as providing help with registering for future workshops and events via JobGateway. Free Movie Night

Free Movie Night at Otterbein United Methodist Church (258 Dalrymple Street, Pittsfield) will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. Free lemonade and popcorn will be served. The movie title is “Forever My Girl.” Public is welcome.
