YHS scholarship awards

The YHS Alumni Scholarship Fund awarded $20,000 in scholarships at the June 7 Youngsville commencement ceremony. The 2019 awardees are Gwendolyn Darling, Erin Dunn, Mikhyle Fehlman, Erica Jewel, Bailey Leamon, Sheri Lindstrom, Harley Maze, Ellen McCluskey, Alyssa Molek, Paul Schwanke, Noah Senz, Jocelyn Taydus, Brandon Victor, Jacob Williams, and Jedidiah Winslow.

Created in1985 by the YHS class of 1950, the Scholarship Fund has awarded 188 graduating Youngsville seniors over $184,000.

Funded entirely by memorial donations and proceeds from its yearly golf tournament, the Alumni Scholarship Fund is grateful for the community generosity and pleased to be able to help area students continue their education. Donations can be sent to PO Box 73, Youngsville, PA, 16371.

Music at Island Park

Youngsville’s Music in the Park (at Island Park) is a free, family-friendly community event that takes place on Thursday evenings now through August 29.

On Thursday, June 13, the country Gospel band “Touch of Gold” will play from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Thursday, June 29, the band “American Pie” will play music from the ’50s and ’60s.

Free Career Center Workshop at Library

On Tuesday, June 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., there will be a free PA CareerLink Workshop at the Youngsville Public Library.

The workshop topic will be “Stress Management for home & work” and is hosted by a CareerLink staff member, Rebecca Whitney (TEF). If you are receiving unemployment benefits, attending one of these free workshops will count towards one of your job requirement activities. At this workshop, you will learn short term and long term techniques to deal with stress, create more peaceful environments, and calm your life.

Although walk-ins are welcome, you can register ahead by calling Rebecca at (814) 853-5141 or if you have a PA CareerLink account you can register using the “calendar of events” (under “events” tab).

Whitney is also available for one-on-one assistance. Call her number to schedule an appointment.

Run.Walk.Bike.Hike.

Every Monday and Friday, meet at the YMCA Youngsville branch at 5:30 p.m. and join in the free community event. Everyone is welcome. Families, friends, even pets are encouraged to join in the fun. The goal is to meet at the YMCA Youngsville branch (located at Island Park) and, focusing on the Youngsville Bike/Hike Trail, we will come together, families and fellow community members, to enjoy this outdoor fitness opportunity. It’s up to you if you want to go beyond the Bike/Hike Trail to other locations. This is a casual event, no registration is required, and you do not have to participate every Monday or Friday. Moms/strollers, children/bicycles, youth, adults, and pets are encouraged to join in and meet other people with like interests as you enjoy this free event.

Free lunch for kids

A free lunch program for kids will be served at the YMCA Youngsville branch from Monday, June 17, to Friday, August 16, from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Lunches will not be served the week of Monday, July 1, to Friday, July 5.

This program is sponsored through the PA Department of Education.

Summer playground

lending program

Come to Island Park and borrow playground equipment and games. The YMCA Youngsville branch is making this available during operating hours. Children ages 10+ may register for free. Children under 10 may also borrow equipment when accompanied by an adult. This is not a supervised program.

Branch hours are Monday to Friday, 5 to 7 a.m.; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 3 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Growth Evolution

The YMCA Youngsville’s Growth Evolution Program starts June 20 and 21, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and is a great program for teens, tweens, and adults. Contact the Yngs Branch for details.

Pound Fitness

Pound Fitness returns to the Youngsville Y branch. Pound fitness is a combination of cardio and weight training exercise approach that includes some of the rhythmic techniques used in Pilates. Adults and youth ages 12+ are welcome. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m., June 18 to July 30. Community Blood Bank

The Community Blood Bank will be at the Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19.

Garland VFD

Chicken BBQ

On Saturday, June 15, the Garland Volunteer Fire Department is having a Chicken BBQ at Friendship Field in Pittsfield starting at noon until out. All orders are to go. A meal includes a half chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, and a roll. A whole dinner is for a $10 donation and half dinner for a $6 donation. Chicken only is for a $5 donation. Donations directly benefit the Garland Volunteer Fire Department.

Free Rouse Concert Series

The Suites at the Rouse will start its free Outdoor Concert Series on Thursday, June 13, with the band “Take 5” playing from 6 to 8 p.m.

Take 5 features classic and contemporary rock.

All concerts are free to the public and all ages are welcome.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The concert is at the Suites at Rouse, 615 Rouse Ave. A complete listing of upcoming Rouse Concert Series dates and bands is at YoungsvilleLibrary.org (community news tab).
