The YEMS PTO hosted this family-fun show. YHS Golf Scramble Correction

The Annual YHS Scholarship Golf Scramble, benefiting the YHS Scholarship Fund, is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 (not Sunday as printed last week). This four-person team event is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at the Jackson Valley Golf Club. The $220-per-team entry fee includes greens fees, riding cart rental, lunch, prizes, and a donation to the YHS Scholarship Fund. The team format will include both scratch and handicap divisions.

Free Workshop at Library

On Tuesday, May 7, a free PACareerLink workshop, hosted by CareerLink staff member Rebecca Whitney, will be held at the Youngsville Public Library from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

If you are receiving unemployment benefits, attending this workshop will count towards one of your job requirement activities.

The May 7 workshop topic is “Budgeting 101.” Participants will learn to take control of their financial future with tips on how to start and maintain a budget. Rebecca will also discuss the importance of creating a budget and participants will have an opportunity to start/create a budget. Whitney will also be available to address individual questions regarding PACareerLink programs and other career-based needs.

Although walk-ins are welcome, you can register ahead by either calling Rebecca at (814) 853-5141 or if you have a PACareerLink account you can register using the “calendar of events” (under “events” tab).

Free Community Day

at Youngsville YMCA

A free “Community Day” at the Youngsville YMCA branch will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a time for everyone in the community to come and use the facilities at the YMCA’s Youngsville branch for free. The Youngsville YMCA branch is building at Island Park (80 Ford Street). Youngsville Y visitors must be age 12 and older. Visitors on Community Free Day just need to sign in and register at the welcome center.

There is also a non-member “Playground Lending Program” that is offered year-round through the Youngsville Y Branch: Youth (age 10 & older) may register at the Youngsville Y as a friend and borrow playground equipment. No membership is required. A parent must register with the staff at the Youngsville Y to be a YMCA Youth Friend. Youth equipment includes basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, Frisbees, hula hoops, four square, and more. Mother’s Day

Chicken BBQ

On Sunday, May 12, the Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department will be having a Mother’s Day Chicken BBQ fundraising event from noon to 2 p.m. (or until sold out) for a $10 donation per meal. Eat in and take out are available. Each meal includes a half-chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, a roll, dessert, and drink.

Scoops for Troops

The Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua are hosting the Scoops for Troops Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, May 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Youngsville Free Methodist Church (179 Davis Street). This will help the Blue Star Mothers raise funds to honor local graduating seniors who have enlisted. The cost of the event is by donation.

The Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua is a new, local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers organization. The purpose of the organization is to support the military and veterans.

First UMC

Preschool Celebration

On Sunday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m., the First UMC of Youngsville (225 E. Main St) will be both recognizing and celebrating its preschool program, which was operated from 1969-2018 at the First UMC.

While the 1st UMC is disappointed that they can no longer continue this important ministry, they also feel motivated to celebrate 49 years of Christian early education that they have been able to offer the community.

Members of the public who were associated with the preschool in any way (students, teachers, parents, and/or supporters) are invited to join this day of celebration/recognition.

Although the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool season officially kicks off with a free community day on Saturday, June 8, you can purchase season passes now through May 31 and receive a special early bird discount ($10 savings).
