Youngsville Public Library 10th Annual Summer Super-Readers excel
Thanks to the continued support of local businesses and faithful patrons, the Youngsville Public Library has been able to continue to offer its annual Summer ‘Super-Reader’ program for kids in grades kindergarten completed to 12th grade. This year over 975 books were read by kindergarten-second grade students and over 86,782 pages read by students in grades 3-12; all that was accomplished within a six-week time period.
Readers that completed the top benchmark were also eligible to win a t-shirt. This year’s t-shirt sponsors are Carnahan Construction, Dr. Pikna, DMD, and the Friends of YPL. To qualify for a t-shirt K-2nd graders each read over 45 books, 3rd-5th graders each read over 1,300 pages, 6th-8th graders each read over 1,400 pages, 9th-12th graders each read over 1,650 pages, and “extreme” readers (any grade level) each read over 3,800 pages with the six-weeks. Over 36 readers reached the top, t-shirt level this year.
“Each time a student reached a pre-set benchmark they would receive five raffle ticket chances toward ‘larger’ incentive prizes which were sponsored by local businesses and patrons,” stated Library Director Kristy Wallace. “The more each student read, the more raffle ticket chances they could earn toward incentive prizes that appeal to all grade levels such as fair passes, gift certificates, various craft kits, and other games to name just a few things. Due to the magnitude of this very worthwhile program, the Youngsville Library just couldn’t support the cost of grab-bag prizes, incentive prizes, and t-shirts without the outpouring of support from area businesses and patrons. The success of our program is directly related to being able to offer fun and enticing incentive prizes.”
Super-Reader sponsors
“The Board and I can’t express enough thanks and appreciation for all the businesses and patrons who help keep this incredible K-12 Summer Super-Reader program alive each year by sponsoring raffle-incentive prizes and T-shirts for top-level readers. I’d also Great Expectations for helping us to keep T-shirt costs as low as possible each year,” stated Library Director Kristy Wallace. “The reason why we’ve been able to offer this extensive reading program for ten years now is because of the support of area businesses and patrons. We realize that local businesses are inundated with donation and sponsorship requests, which is why we are especially grateful that they continually choose to support our program. It’s really no surprise to us that the kids in our area really look forward to this program each year; we always get students who can’t wait to register and start reading way before summer vacation [and the program] even starts. That alone tells you how far reaching and meaningful this program is to the kids in our area.”
This year’s business sponsors for raffle prizes (and prize winners) are: (1) Youngsville Dairy Queen, which awarded a free ice cream cone to each summer reader who completed at least one level – this year that meant over 70 coupons; (2) AR Beatty Diesel: $15 Walmart Card – Jessy Taylor winner, 2-$5 DQ gift cards- Rebecca Bennett & Halee Mineweaser winners; (3) Attitudes by Roxy: Mega Super-Soaker Crossbow- Kristy Bennett; (4) Bob’s Garage: 2 sets of Fair Passes (Fair passes given in 2 passes per set)- Starla Hoffner & Seth Jensen; (5) The Galley Restaurant: 10 personal pan pizza certificates – Jessy Taylor, Rebecca Bennett, Halee Mineweaser, Katharine Smith, Amanda Bennett, Brandan Bennett, Justin Cross, Abbie Downs, Bree Jewell, Aaron Bennett; (6) Jim “the Car” Mahn: 2 sets of Fair Passes -Lyddia Rouqeux, Bree Jewell; (7) Lauger’s Good Lawn: 4 sets of Fair passes -Jessica Mack, Jessy Taylor, Sarah Tomes, Tony Case, 3-$15 Walmart cards- Garret Jensen, Kristy Bennett, Jake Williams, $5 DQ gift card- Abbie Downs; (8) Nelson Funeral Home: 4 sets of Fair Passes- Becca Emple, Mikey Carnahan, Kinzlea Chase, Justin Cross, 3-$15 Walmart cards- Amanda Bennett, Jordan Bennett, Madison Carnahan, $5 DQ card- Aaron Bennett; (9) Pete’s Beverage: $15 Walmart Card-Lyddia Rougeux, 2-$5 DQ gift cards- Katie Down, Collin Stover; (10) Valley Bowling: 5-$5 gift certificates: Justin Cross, Nathan Ciprich, Lyddia Rougeux, Kate Shippee, Abbie Downs, (11) VanHouten Family Chiropractic: 2 sets of Fair Passes- Kate Shippee, Madison Carnahan, (12) Youngsville Borough: 10 sets of Day Passes for pool (2 per set) – Collin Stover, Chase May (2), Josiah Camp, Katharine Smith, Bryan Yost, Haven May, Lydia Gregory, Nathan Ciprich, Justin Cross; (13) Youngsville Hardware: Deluxe Spa Set prize- Haven May; and (14) Youngsville Pharmacy: Rubber band and strands kit- Nathan Ciprich, Glow pop kit-Ani Entrekin.

“Dine to Make a Difference” for BVF Fund
From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, the Brokenstraw Valley Fund (BVF) is teaming with the Warren Bob Evans’ Community Fundraiser program for “Dine to make a difference.” Bob Evans will donate 15 percent of sales when presented with a special BVF/Bob Evans flier at the time of checkout. Since fliers cannot be passed out at the restaurant, various local businesses have generously volunteered to be flier pick up sites. You can also print a flier by visiting BVF’s website: www.OurBVF.org.
Fliers can be picked up during business hours at the following Youngsville locations: Miss Millie’s Proper Petals, Northwest Savings Bank, Tops Market message board in Youngsville, Youngsville Borough Office, Youngsville Hardware, Youngsville Pharmacy, and the Youngsville Public Library.
The purpose of the BVF is to create a foundation that will be able to assist the Brokenstraw Valley area with community-minded projects and improvements. In the spirit of the Community Foundation of Warren County (CFWC), the BVF intends to grow its principal market value to a level that will generate sufficient interest so that interest only will be distributed (in grant form) and the principal will be left untouched to grow.
“If you dine at Bob Evans on Friday, August 21st and present a flier, you will be helping to build BVF’s initial principal,” BVF Secretary, Kristy Wallace stated. “The BVF is in the process of trying to raise a minimum of $25,000 for its initial principal by May 31, 2016. To assist the BVF in this forward-thinking endeavor the CFWC has generously pledged to make a dollar-for-dollar match to the BVF (up to $25,000). That means that if – with the help of the residents in our community – we raise $25,000 by the May 31st deadline that we will have double that for our initial investment principal. So not only does every dollar count for BVF, it can actually count twice as we move closer to reaching our initial $25,000 goal.”

Community’s Service
Award presented
at Cornfest
Mayor James Farr at the 10th Annual Amazing Corn Fest on Aug. 7-8 during the Community Award presentation awarded Nancy Holmberg with the Annual Community Award. Farr commented Nancy’s community involvement began long before the current ROY organization. She started the Youngsville Area Business Association or YABA to get business people working together. Youngsville’s Christmas celebration began on her front porch with Santa for the local children. YABA started the annual car show. She served as president of ROY for about six years and is currently the grant coordinator and writer. Over the past 10 years, ROY has formed partnerships with the local corporations and foundations which have helped fund Streetscape, facade improvements, and events. Experience is the best teacher and Nancy’s experience and hard work, have benefited the revitalization efforts for Youngsville.
Without her foresight and leadership, we would not be in the position of preparing for Phase II of the Streetscape or establishing the endowment for the continued success of the Youngsville area. Nancy has a proven vested interest in the continued success of the community that she loves and is proud to call home.
She also received a handwritten note from the Youngsville Borough Council for her countless hours and resources that she has invested in the Youngsville Community.
