Camp Halo begins
at Doorkeeper Camp
Camp Halo began in 1999 with 20 children “camping out” in a backyard for a weekend. Since then, we have grown to five weeks of camp, averaging 40 children per week, so that 300 children are able to attend. Now Camp Halo in Spring Creek provides a week of camp; free of charge, to under-privileged children ages 6 to 15 from the Warren, Erie and Crawford Counties Pennsylvania area and surrounding region. The camp is a safe-haven for many of these children, over 75 percent of who experience some form of abuse in their home environment. Camp Halo provides campers with three nutritious meals a day (plus snacks), school supplies, school clothes, hygiene products, Bibles, and quilts.
During their stay at camp, these children not only enjoy activities such as swimming, hiking, sports, crafts, and horseback riding, but they also learn valuable life skills. Among other things, campers are taught about basic cooking, cleaning skills and proper hygiene – much needed skills for the kids to take care of themselves in their home life.
At present, the summer camp is funded by private donations. With the current economic instability in our region and increasing costs, our donors have not been able to keep up with our growth. Therefore we are seeking funding through new means. The funds will go towards purchasing food, clothing, shoes, hygiene products and toiletries, first aid and lice kits, kitchen supplies, paper products and cleaning supplies, bedding, and school supplies. Many local churches and business have donation supplies for this years’ camp.
With your help, Camp Halo can continue to be serving underprivileged children in the community. Along with the main building which provides us with a very nice kitchen & cooking environment, it also is the home of arts & crafts, various and fun games like carpet pool, ping pong, table soccer & many more! It holds even a built in fire place for those rainy nights that come and go in NWPA It is accommodated with a couple of couches, and a selection of chairs to relax and talk with other campers & counselors. Our main building is also the area where we hold chapel with Pastor Sheppard, and learn about God our Lord and Savior and praise his name 🙂
Bored of being inside? Have no fear, Doorkeepers also offers plenty of various outdoor activities as well. They provide us with a volleyball net, and basketball courts as well as a big open field for kickball for all of our sports’ needs!! Next we can hike on a path up through the woods for a few miles and see the nature that God has provided doorkeepers with to share with us as well. A camp fire pit for night time and s’more’s with our assigned cabins & counselor as well, a time to bond, laugh and have a good time too. It also provided with an in ground pool! We enjoy taking the kids down by the pool and letting them swim until their fishy heart is content!
Our mission at Camp Halo is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teaching of God’s Word to the children within a camp setting. We strive to provide an atmosphere of love and respect where children can learn to build positive relationships along with a loving relationship with God. Through the week we seek to strengthen their values through teamwork, kindness and responsibility. The camp is still in need of girls ‘deodorants, shampoo and body wash.
To make a donation contact on the web: Doorkeepers Christian Outreach or contact Love INC at 563-3398. Donations are tax deductible.
