ROY Store

“Make an Offer Sale” will be held Friday Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Roy Store next door to Allegheny Artistry 106 East Main Street, Youngsville. No reasonable offer refused!

For those who may not know about the Roy Store, it is a store dedicated to selling nice donated items for the purpose of funding projects for the Revitalization of Youngsville. The Artistry supports the store in that they take care of sales year-around when there are not special sales like YABA Days. All of those sales have added up to thousands of dollars to help improve the community.

Since the Artistry is closing Aug. 31st, the future of the store is unknown. Regardless of what that future is, it is a good time to clear out the old to make room for the new in the Spring. Everything must go. We do not want to leave a mess for the next tenant even if that tenant is ROY again.

Pool letter

Recently the community of Youngsville residents and others received a letter containing the following information:

Many of you are aware that Youngsville Borough’s 2014 budget contained funds for the municipal pool. However these funds are once again not sufficient enough to cover all operating expenses.

In February 2011, Friends of Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool, Inc. was formed to assist the Borough in funding the pool’s continued operation. We formed a non-profit corporation and have been registered as a 501C-3 public charity with the Internal Revenue Service. In that first year of operation, with financial assistance from our generous community members, we raised the funds needed to keep this valuable community asset open for the last three seasons.

Using the funds previously raised by our organization, we installed a new electric service and purchased needed pool equipment. In addition the pool walls and floor were sand blasted to remove decades of old paint, cracks were sealed and the entire pool surface was repainted. We plan to continue our efforts into the future for the benefit of the Brokenstraw Valley community, especially for the children for whom your pool has become a wonderful place for them to play, socialize and most importantly to learn to swim. Future capital improvements projects in the making are installing a 1 meter jump platform, converting the shallow end of the pool to a sloped entry with a splash pad and improving the overall appearance of the facility and surrounding area.

Again we need your help to continue our efforts. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the Friends of BVSP, Inc. or become a business/corporation sponsor and assist us in keeping one of the most valuable community/regional assets open now and in future years.

To those who have made contributions in the past, we “thank you.” Please consider renewing your yearly sponsorship/membership or obtaining a new membership this year. Should you decide to make a contribution in addition to or in place of a membership, all are tax deductible.

Anyone who like to make a contribution to this project, please send to Friends of the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool, Inc. P.O. Box 1, Youngsville, PA 16371 Thank you in advance for generosity and continued support.

Corn Festival

dedication

This year’s “A’maze’ing” Corn Festival and parade, celebrating its 8th year, will be dedicated to deceased Youngsville supporter Helga Laibacher, announced Ron Young, the Revitalization Of Youngsville (ROY) Chairman of the event.

“We, as a committee, think she deserves this honor,” said Young. Laibacher passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic due to complications from heart surgery.

Laibacher was actively involved in the ROY (Revitalization of Youngsville) organization, where she volunteered countless hours to help make Youngsville a better place. She was the ROY Organization Vice President where her role was to create a communication process and funding mechanism by which ROY took a leadership role to make restoration projects happen. That meant to get everyone working collaboratively toward the same goal. She was especially involved with the Revitalization Of Youngsville’s annual Corn Festival, which fell under her committee description to bring the community together, creating a positive image of Youngsville, and bringing people from everywhere into town to experience what she called “the lovely community” of Youngsville.

The grand marshals for this year’s annual parade and festival are Laibacher’s two daughters Jenie (Elder) Orn of Sellersville, Pa. and Elke Elder of Warren, Pa. Read their memories of their mother below. The CornFest parade is scheduled for Aug. 16 beginning at 11 a.m. from 488 East Main St. near Robert’s Farmers Insurance and ending at Dick’s Service Center, 3 N Main St

Following the parade, an awards ceremony will be held in the downtown. After the American Legion ceremony is conducted, two awards will be given: One, a community service award, winner chosen by the Borough Council of Youngsville, will be presented by Youngsville Mayor Jim Farr. The second, the First Annual Helga Laibacher Memorial Community Service award, winner chosen by the ROY Corn Festival Committee, will be presented by Helga’s daughters Jenie and Elke. Following the special award ceremony family members and friends will gather at the Borough building, 40 Railroad Street to dedicate a tree to Helga Laibacher.

The Corn festival gets underway Friday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. And, goes into Saturday, Aug. 16 with numerous family activities such as enjoying tasty vendor and restaurant foods, airplane rides from the nearby Brokenstraw airport, a bouncy obstacle course for children, a scare crow contest, and a corn eating contest, a corn maze, fireworks, and Fire Hall chicken barbecue.

Annual Summer Super

Reader program

Summer K-12 Super-Reader winners earn major prizes: Thanks to monetary donations and gift certificates by local businesses and private individuals, Youngsville Public Library was able to continue to provide raffle prizes for its ninth Annual Summer Super-Reader program.

Students in kindergarten completed through 12th grade, read for grab-bag prizes, T-shirts, bonus prizes, and raffle ticket chances towards some top-level prizes, such as fair tickets, super soakers, and slip-n-slides. There are six reading log levels (S, U, P, E, R, and Reader) and kids can try to complete as many levels as they would like but are encouraged to complete all six.

“This was a truly amazing year for our summer super-reader program,” said Library Director Kristy Wallace. “We had a record number of kids not only participating in the program but actually completing all six reading log levels. When kids reach the top level they can receive a Summer Super-reader T-shirt. The t-shirts were sponsored by Bob’s Garage, Dr. Pikna, DMD, and Carnahan Construction. Ever since the drastic budget cuts in 2010, our library has needed to annually ask for help from local businesses and individuals so that we can raise enough money to keep our summer reading program alive. We are so grateful to all the businesses and people who continue to donate money or gift certificates for this worthwhile program.”

In just six weeks this year’s summer super-readers in the K-3 group read over 1,034 books and students from the 4th -12th grade groups read over 95,109 pages.

“Each year Carrie Peterson, owner of Youngsville Dairy Queen, provides a free ice cream cone coupon for each reader who completes at least one reading log level,” Wallace said. “Her generosity ensures that each participant will win a prize, even if their name isn’t drawn for one of the special ‘raffle ticket’ prizes.”

Marsh Avenue

Block Party

On Saturday, Aug. 2, the residents of Youngsville’s Marsh Avenue held the 12th annual block party. Thirty-two residents gathered for grilled hotdogs and tureen meal. Denny Lore, who usually is the chef, was a little late so Bill Johnson took over that task.

The eldest in attendance was Pauline Fill. She looks forward to the event each year; youngest member- Sara Tome. Other long-time residents attending were Ken and Jeanne Johnson and Jerry and Lois Westover. It was a pleasure to have Ken and Janet Dininny able to attend this year. Some new residents of the avenue became more acquainted with their neighbors. Others brought family members visiting from away. There was much laughter, reminiscence of years past and talk of the changes while living on Marsh Ave. in the “Biggest Little Town on the Map.”

The gathering was hosted by Bill and Marilyn Johnson and Jim and Marilyn Miller. All anticipate another neighborhood gathering August 2015.
