Historical Society open house today

The Elk Township Historical Society is holding an open house today, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Scandia one-room school at the four corners in Scandia. The 1870s wooden one-room school is restored to its original appearance, including school room furniture and the painted wooden black board. Over a century of enrollment records are available for reference, including records from eleven other one-room schools that were located in Elk Township. A museum across the hallway has food preparation and other hand tools used on the homestead, genealogical references, photographs and much more relating to life in the area. Learn about family-operated dairy farms, methods of preserving food, hand-made leather shoes and the Scandia Coal Mine.

Pig roast

The Spring Creek Sportsman’s Club, located on Turner Hill Rd., is holding a pig roast on Aug. 20 starting at 6 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. The event benefits the club’s efforts to promote sportsmanship in the area of hunting, encourage youth hunting and sponsorship of hunter trapper education classes.

Sensory swim

A sensory swim is set at the CAR Pool today, Aug. 13 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The goal is to provide a specific time for those kids with sensory issues to enjoy the pool but to do so — most importantly — safely. Participants will be allowed in the shallow section regardless of age and with fewer kids there will be less splashing and less noise.

Newton Dinner Club to meet

The Newton Dinner Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at Station 61 Restaurant (formerly Richard’s Restaurant) in Youngsville.

The WAHS class of 1963 will be meeting at Mama Jane’s for breakfast on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. the gruop meets every third Tuesday of the month.
