Study Club met in January
The Warren Antiques Study Club heard about a Warren County institution — in the figurative and literal senses — at its Jan. 24 meeting. Longtime Warren State Hospital employee Samantha Whitaker spoke about the history of the hospital, from the purchase of land in the area to the mining of local stone for the construction of the Main Building, which lasted from 1874 to 1880. Landscaping, including fountains and tree-lined drives, have been maintained to the present, she said. The facility was initially built for 650 patients — the first of which was admitted on Dec. 5, 1880. The population was 1,116 in 1916 and 152 today. The club will meet on Monday, Feb. 28, at the Woman’s Club of Warren.
Christian Woman to meet
Jamestown-Warren Christian Women, Village Missions Country Partners, will meet Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11:45 a.m. at Praise Fellowship Church, Russell. Emil Bundy, Youngsville, will be the guest speaker who will share how God played a part in his life’s choices and course of events. Lunch is $5 featuring two soups, salad, sandwiches and dessert. Wear something red and bring a $1 brown bag item. For reservations, call Nancy Schuyler at (716) 720-4410 if a caller does not contact you by Feb 6. New walk-ins welcome. There are no dues or membership.
Art League meeting
The Warren Art League will meet Thursday, Feb. 3, at First Lutheran Church, East and Third St., Warren, at 6:30 p.m. for a sketching session. Bring your favorite sketching materials, paper, and an interesting item to sketch. If significant snow or ice occurs, the event will reschedule to Feb. 10.
